- Messi Hails Argentina’s ‘Insane’ World Cup Journey After Reaching Second Straight Final
Lionel Messi has described Argentina’s achievement of reaching back-to-back FIFA World Cup finals as “insane” after inspiring the defending champions to a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semifinal.
The 39-year-old captain once again proved decisive when Argentina appeared destined for elimination. Trailing until the 85th minute, Messi created the equaliser for Enzo Fernández before delivering another pinpoint assist in stoppage time for Lautaro Martínez to head home the winner and send La Albiceleste into Sunday’s final against European champions Spain.
The remarkable turnaround means Argentina will now have the chance to defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar in 2022, becoming the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to retain football’s biggest prize if they triumph in New Jersey.
Speaking after the thrilling victory, an emotional Messi praised the spirit and determination of the Argentine squad.
“This World Cup is incredible, and being in another final is amazing,” Messi said.
“To the Argentinians, I say the same thing I said in Qatar: enjoy it, because this team will never let you down.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner described reaching consecutive World Cup finals as an extraordinary accomplishment.
“Playing two World Cup finals in a row is insane. This group is incredible.”
Messi also revealed he had complete faith in the squad before the tournament began, insisting their success was built on hard work rather than luck.
“Honestly, before the World Cup started, I trusted this group and knew we would be among the top four.
“We’ve been the best for the last four years, and we proved once again that nobody gave us anything. Everything we’ve achieved has been earned on the pitch.
“Let it hurt whoever it hurts and let them say whatever they want—nobody gave this team anything for free.”
Argentina’s comeback against England was one for the history books. The South Americans became the first team to recover from trailing as late as the 85th minute and still win a World Cup semifinal within normal time.
The victory also underlined Argentina’s remarkable consistency on the global stage. The South Americans have now reached consecutive World Cup finals for only the second time, having previously achieved the feat in 1986 and 1990.
It is also Argentina’s seventh appearance in a World Cup final, moving them clear in second place on the all-time list behind only Germany, who have reached eight finals.
Messi’s influence throughout the tournament has been immense. The veteran forward has either scored or provided an assist in each of his last 13 appearances for club and country, highlighting the remarkable form that continues to define the twilight years of his illustrious career.
Sunday’s showdown will also be a historic occasion, marking the first-ever FIFA World Cup final between the reigning Copa América champions and the reigning European champions.
