No Military Personnel Will Be Stationed at Polling Stations – Ghana Armed Forces
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed it will not deploy personnel to polling stations during the country’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a bid to ensure the integrity of the democratic process, GAF stated its role will remain supportive, with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) holding primary responsibility for election security.
The military clarified it would intervene only upon formal request by the police, emphasizing that its presence would be limited to standby operations.
In a statement issued on December 1, 2024, GAF urged citizens to report any individuals posing as military personnel or wearing military-style clothing at polling stations to the nearest police station.
GAF’s announcement reflects its strategy to prevent undue influence on the voting process and maintain public confidence in the electoral system. The move further underscores the institution’s intent to curb impersonation and ensure the sanctity of the electoral process.
As part of its broader mandate, GAF encouraged Ghanaians to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and cooperate with security personnel to maintain order.
“GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the election process,” the statement concluded.
This development comes as Ghana prepares for a closely watched election, with security and fairness expected to be pivotal in fostering voter confidence and safeguarding the nation’s democratic credentials.
