  • PepsiCo Counters KFC Loss with Taco Bell Deal as Burkina Faso Enforces Vody Ban

PepsiCo has secured an 11-year agreement to remain Taco Bell’s beverage partner through 2036, protecting one of its most strategically valuable restaurant relationships days after KFC decided to replace Pepsi products with Coca-Cola across its United States outlets.

The renewal covers participating Taco Bell restaurants, Taco Bell Cantina and Live Más Cafe locations in the United States. PepsiCo will also continue supplying Taco Bell in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Thailand.

Customers will retain access to Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, Mountain Dew and Starry, alongside Taco Bell exclusives Mountain Dew Baja Blast and Baja Midnight. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Although the agreement preserves an existing account rather than adding a new customer, its timing gives it greater strategic importance. KFC announced on October 15 that Coca-Cola would become the beverage partner for its 3,718 United States restaurants, ending a PepsiCo relationship dating to 1986.

KFC and Taco Bell are both controlled by Yum Brands, which PepsiCo created after spinning off its restaurant businesses in 1997. The contrasting decisions demonstrate that corporate ancestry no longer guarantees commercial loyalty. Restaurant chains increasingly select beverage partners according to economics, consumer demand, innovation and the operational support offered to franchisees.

For PepsiCo, retaining Taco Bell limits the risk that KFC’s departure could trigger a broader loss of fountain-drink accounts within the Yum system. It also preserves a partnership that has produced products extending far beyond an ordinary supply contract.

Mountain Dew Baja Blast, developed for Taco Bell and introduced in 2004, has grown into a billion-dollar brand. Its expansion into retail bottles, limited editions, gelato and other formats shows how an exclusive restaurant drink can become an independent consumer franchise.

The companies also created Doritos Locos Tacos, combining Taco Bell’s menu platform with one of PepsiCo’s largest snack brands. The product will mark its 15th anniversary in 2027, with additional flavours planned.

These collaborations explain why Taco Bell’s value to PepsiCo cannot be measured only by the volume of drinks dispensed in restaurants. The partnership functions as a testing ground through which the beverage and snack company can develop products, observe consumer behaviour and transfer successful ideas into wider retail channels.

“Some of PepsiCo’s best foodservice innovations have come from partnerships that challenge us to think differently, and Taco Bell has always brought that energy,” Anne Fink, president of PepsiCo Global Away from Home, said.

She said the combination of Taco Bell’s cultural reach with PepsiCo’s consumer insights, culinary capabilities and beverage expertise would guide the next phase of development.

Meg Farren, Taco Bell’s president for North America, described PepsiCo as a trusted partner of more than two decades and said the companies would work together to support growth, create value across the restaurant system and respond to changing customer needs.

The next stage will focus partly on crafted, functional and energy beverages, including products intended to attract Generation Z consumers and increase visits during morning and afternoon periods.

This is commercially important because traditional carbonated-soft-drink demand faces pressure from health concerns and shifting preferences. Restaurant beverage strategies must increasingly include low-sugar products, energy drinks, flavoured refreshments and formats that consumers perceive as functional or personalised.

PepsiCo therefore needs Taco Bell not only as a distribution channel but also as an innovation partner. The restaurant chain’s younger customer base and willingness to experiment provide conditions for testing products that could later reach supermarkets and other food-service outlets.

The agreement also gives PepsiCo a defensive victory at a difficult moment for its North American beverage operation. Volumes in the division declined 2 per cent in the latest reported quarter, while Chief Executive Ramon Laguarta acknowledged that the company was not competing effectively enough in soft drinks.

KFC’s decision amplified those concerns. Coca-Cola already supplies large restaurant systems including McDonald’s and Wendy’s, and winning KFC strengthens its access to fountain-drink consumers. KFC will begin introducing Coca-Cola products in January 2027 and expects the transition to be completed by spring.

PepsiCo nevertheless retains important food-service relationships with Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway and Jersey Mike’s Subs. Its wider advantage is that it can combine beverages with snack brands, allowing collaborations such as Doritos Locos Tacos that a drinks-focused competitor may find harder to replicate.

The beverage industry is confronting a different challenge in Burkina Faso, where President Ibrahim Traoré has renewed pressure on traders who illegally import prohibited alcoholic energy drinks, including the German-made Vody brand.

Burkina Faso prohibited the production, sale and possession of alcoholic energy drinks in June 2024. Authorities have continued intercepting concealed shipments, indicating that formal restrictions have not eliminated demand or the commercial incentives sustaining illicit distribution.

During an October meeting with regional governors and government officials, Traoré warned that enforcement had to extend beyond issuing a prohibition. He linked the crackdown to concerns about alcohol, drugs and their effects on young people, while calling for local initiatives that direct youth towards sport and healthier activities.

The Taco Bell agreement and Burkina Faso’s enforcement campaign are commercially unrelated, but together they illustrate the forces reshaping beverage markets. In one case, global companies are competing through exclusivity, cultural branding and product innovation. In the other, a government is restricting a product category because it considers the public-health costs unacceptable.

For multinational beverage companies, growth increasingly depends on navigating both pressures. A product may succeed because it speaks to youth culture, but that same appeal can attract regulatory scrutiny when sugar, caffeine or alcohol creates health concerns.

PepsiCo’s Taco Bell renewal shows the value of building products around a restaurant experience rather than treating beverages as interchangeable fountain options. Baja Blast helped create customer loyalty that made the supplier relationship more difficult to displace.

Yet KFC’s switch confirms that no account is permanently secure. Over the next 11 years, PepsiCo must convert contractual protection into continuing innovation, stronger volumes and products aligned with changing health expectations. The agreement buys time and distribution. Its ultimate value will depend on what the partners create with them.
