Number of tourists trooping to the Volta Region is reported to have fallen from 55,000 in 2018 to as low as 3,000 in 2020 even before Covid-19 came into the picture.
This was disclosed by the Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Alexander Nketia, during a webinar organised by the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), and the GTA on the theme: “Rebranding the Tourism Sector in the Volta Through Local participation.”
Mr Alexander Nketia noted that despite the region being a ‘tourism mine’ for the country, tourism related activities in the region has not been adequately patronised.
He also stated that the Volta Region is currently at the bottom of destination preferences despite its attractive tourism sites and hospitality facilities.
“Aside poor road networks, limited investment, and poor service delivery, the Authority has also identified the lack of rigorous marketing and promotion strategy as a major factor hindering the development of tourism in the region,” he stated in the webinar conference.
Speaking on the way forward, Mr Nketia intimated that partnerships and deals were sealed with non-profit organisations, including the Development Institute, towards the creation of a tourism strategy for the region.
In addition, Mr Nketia noted that the region’s social media and online presence is currently being enhanced and has appealed to stakeholders to work together for accelerated development of the hospitality sector.
