UEFA Nations League: Italy, France Progress To Quarter Finals; England Shines in Athens

Italy secured their spot in the Nations League quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Belgium on Thursday, a result that also guaranteed France a place in the last eight despite their lackluster 0-0 draw with Israel in Paris under heavy security.

In Brussels, Italy demonstrated efficiency, taking the lead early when fullback Giovanni Di Lorenzo set up Sandro Tonali for a tap-in just 11 minutes into the match. The Italian side controlled the game, showcasing their tactical discipline and composure to maintain the lead against a Belgian team that struggled to find their rhythm.

Meanwhile, at the Stade de France, a struggling French side managed only a draw against Israel, failing to capitalize on 25 attempts on goal. Despite their efforts, goalkeeper Daniel Peretz made only two notable saves, keeping the score level. The match took place under heavy security after recent violent incidents involving fans, adding to the tense atmosphere.

In Athens, England, under interim coach Lee Carsley, topped their group with a commanding 3-0 win. Despite a series of player withdrawals, Carsley made a bold decision to drop Harry Kane, leading to Ollie Watkins scoring the opener just seven minutes into the match. Noni Madueke’s assist showcased England’s attacking potential, and they continued to press forward.

The Greek side posed challenges for England’s inexperienced defense, with Everton’s Jordan Pickford making a crucial save from Kostas Tsimikas. However, England regained control in the second half, with Jude Bellingham hitting the post before providing the goal that put England ahead after 78 minutes. His shot deflected off the goalkeeper, securing a vital win. Curtis Jones added a third goal shortly after, solidifying England’s position at the top of their group.

As the group stages approach their conclusion, Italy leads their group by three points, with a crucial match against France set for Sunday.
