  • CAF Unveils Record $2 Million Prize as Expanded WAFCON 2026 Signals New Era for Women’s Football

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken another significant step towards transforming women’s football on the continent by announcing a record $2 million prize for the winners of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed the landmark increase during a press conference on Wednesday, describing it as part of the federation’s continued commitment to investing in women’s football and creating greater opportunities for female players and national teams across Africa.

The new winners’ prize represents the largest in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, doubling the $1 million awarded to champions Nigeria after they lifted the title at the previous edition. It is also the third consecutive increase in prize money in as many tournaments, reflecting CAF’s long-term strategy to raise the profile and commercial value of the women’s game.

The increased financial rewards are expected to provide participating federations with greater resources to improve player welfare, youth development, coaching structures and women’s football infrastructure.

The announcement comes just days before the start of the expanded 2026 WAFCON, which kicks off on July 26 and concludes with the final on August 16. For the first time, the continental showpiece will feature 16 teams, an increase from the previous 12-team format, giving more nations the opportunity to compete at Africa’s highest level.

Beyond continental glory, the tournament carries even greater significance as it will also serve as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, adding further intensity to the competition.

Ghana’s Black Queens return to the tournament eager to re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite after missing out on recent editions. They have been drawn in Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali, and Cape Verde in what promises to be one of the most competitive groups of the tournament.

The Black Queens will be aiming to reach the knockout stages and mount a serious challenge for their first continental title. Ghana has twice finished as runners-up in the competition’s history but is still searching for a maiden WAFCON crown.

The expanded tournament is expected to showcase the rapid growth of women’s football across Africa, with emerging nations joining traditional powerhouses such as Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco and Zambia in the race for continental supremacy.

CAF’s continued investment follows the success of recent women’s competitions, which have attracted record attendances, increased television audiences and growing commercial interest. The federation believes that enhanced prize money will not only reward excellence on the pitch but also encourage governments, sponsors and football associations to invest more heavily in the women’s game.

With more teams, higher stakes and the richest prize ever offered in the tournament’s history, the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is shaping up to be a landmark edition that could redefine the future of women’s football on the African continent.
