  • Equities Market Springs Back as MTNGH Accounts For 80.79% Of Value Traded

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange rebounded sharply on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as strong investor demand for Scancom PLC, trading as MTNGH, lifted total market turnover to GH¢19.35 million.

The market recorded total traded volume of 3.83 million shares, valued at GH¢19.35 million, compared with 859,644 shares worth GH¢2.61 million in the previous session. This represented a 345.91% increase in volume and a 642.63% surge in value traded, marking a strong recovery from Monday’s quieter session.

The rebound was overwhelmingly driven by MTNGH, which accounted for 2.33 million shares valued at GH¢15.63 million. The stock alone represented 60.91% of total market volume and 80.79% of total value traded, underlining its continuing dominance as the most liquid counter on the local bourse.

MTNGH opened at GH¢6.57 and closed at GH¢6.69, gaining GH¢0.12 or 1.83%. The price movement pushed the telecoms stock closer to its year-high of GH¢6.80, reinforcing its position as one of the key counters shaping market direction this year.

Kasapreko PLC followed as the second most active counter by value, with 848,512 shares changing hands for GH¢1.83 million. The stock closed at GH¢2.13, up from GH¢2.00, representing a gain of 6.50%. Kasapreko accounted for 22.14% of total market volume and 9.45% of value traded.

The strong showing by Kasapreko is notable because the stock has quickly become one of the more closely watched counters since its listing, attracting regular trading interest from investors seeking exposure to Ghana’s consumer goods and beverages segment.

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated placed third by value, recording 217,226 shares traded for GH¢434,882.44. However, the stock came under selling pressure, closing at GH¢2.00 from a previous price of GH¢2.06, a decline of 2.91%.

Standard Chartered Bank Ghana recorded GH¢329,918.62 in turnover from 4,713 shares traded. The stock eased marginally by GH¢0.02 to close at GH¢70.00, representing a 0.03% decline. TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana also featured among the top five counters by value, trading 6,143 shares worth GH¢245,720.00 and closing unchanged at GH¢40.00.

Together, the top five counters by value — MTNGH, Kasapreko, ETI, SCB and TotalEnergies — generated GH¢18.47 million, equivalent to 95.46% of total market turnover. That concentration shows that while overall activity improved sharply, liquidity remained heavily clustered in a few large and actively traded counters.

Ordinary shares accounted for the bulk of activity, with 3.64 million shares worth GH¢19.25 million traded. This represented 94.86% of total volume and 99.51% of total value. The Ghana Alternative Market recorded 196,934 shares valued at GH¢94,988.77, representing 5.14% of volume and 0.49% of market value.

Price action was broadly mixed but tilted towards notable gains in selected counters. Intravenous Infusions PLC was the day’s strongest gainer, rising from GH¢0.46 to GH¢0.50, a gain of 8.70%. Dannex Ayrton Starwin followed with a 7.32% increase to GH¢0.44, while Kasapreko gained 6.50% and Clydestone advanced 6.25% to GH¢4.25.

Ecobank Ghana also gained ground, rising from GH¢37.00 to GH¢38.00, a 2.70% increase. Republic Bank Ghana added 0.74% to close at GH¢4.08, while MTNGH’s 1.83% rise added significant weight to the overall tone of the session because of the size of its traded value.

On the losing side, Atlantic Lithium Ghana recorded the steepest decline, falling from GH¢8.46 to GH¢7.62, a drop of 9.93%. ETI lost 2.91%, CalBank slipped 1.25% to GH¢0.79, Ghana Oil Company declined marginally by 0.13% to GH¢7.96, and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana eased by 0.03%.

Despite the rebound in total turnover, several counters recorded no trades, including AngloGold Ashanti PLC, Aluworks, Benso Palm Plantation, Cocoa Processing Company, PBC, Trust Bank Gambia, NewGold ETF, Standard Chartered preference shares, Samba Foods and Digicut.

The session therefore presented a market with strong headline activity but narrow underlying concentration. MTNGH’s trading alone defined the day, while Kasapreko provided additional momentum on both volume and price appreciation.

For investors, the message from Tuesday’s session is clear: the equities market remains capable of sharp turnover rebounds when liquidity rotates into a few high-interest counters. But breadth remains an important issue. A healthier and more balanced market would require stronger participation across more listed equities, rather than heavy dependence on one or two counters.

The latest trading session also reinforces MTNGH’s role as a key bellwether stock on the Ghana Stock Exchange. Its liquidity, price movement and turnover weight continue to give it disproportionate influence over market activity, even when broader trading participation remains uneven.

With value traded rising more than sixfold from the previous session, Tuesday’s market showed renewed investor appetite. But the concentration of activity means the recovery in turnover should be read carefully: this was not a broad market surge. It was largely an MTNGH-driven rebound, supported by a strong Kasapreko performance and selective buying in a handful of counters.
