Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid as Spanish Giants Seek End to Trophy Drought

  • Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid as Spanish Giants Seek End to Trophy Drought

Real Madrid have turned to one of the most successful and controversial managers in modern football, appointing Jose Mourinho on a three-year contract in a dramatic bid to restore order and return silverware to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish giants confirmed on Thursday that the Portuguese tactician will officially begin his second spell at the club on July 13 when preseason preparations commence ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Mourinho’s return comes during one of the most turbulent periods in recent Real Madrid history. The 15-time UEFA Champions League winners endured another disappointing season domestically and in Europe, prompting club president Florentino Perez to make sweeping changes in search of stability and renewed success.

Real’s frustrations reached their peak last month when fierce rivals Barcelona secured the LaLiga title with a 2-0 victory in El Clasico — the first time in 94 years that the Spanish title race had been decided directly between the two clubs in a head-to-head clash.

European disappointment also continued to haunt Los Blancos after back-to-back quarter-final exits in the UEFA Champions League, an unacceptable outcome by the club’s lofty standards.

Managerial instability only deepened the crisis. Former coach Xabi Alonso was dismissed in January following defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, while interim replacement Alvaro Arbeloa struggled to unite a fractured dressing room.

Reports of internal tensions escalated dramatically after a heated confrontation between captain Federico Valverde and midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni reportedly turned physical. The incident allegedly left Valverde requiring hospital treatment for a facial cut, with both players fined heavily by the club.

Against that backdrop, Perez has chosen a familiar figure known for commanding strong personalities and demanding discipline.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2014, arriving in Spain after guiding Inter Milan to a historic treble. During his first spell at the Bernabeu, he ended Barcelona’s dominance by leading Real to the 2011 Copa del Rey before capturing the 2011/12 LaLiga title with a record-breaking 100-point campaign.

That Real side became renowned for its intensity, attacking power and relentless competitiveness under Mourinho, although his confrontational style also intensified tensions between Madrid and Barcelona during the peak years of Pep Guardiola’s reign.

Since leaving Madrid, however, Mourinho’s success has been more limited. He won the Europa League and League Cup with Manchester United and later guided AS Roma to UEFA Europa Conference League glory. His coaching journey also included spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Fenerbahce and Benfica.

The 63-year-old had been contracted to Benfica until June 2027 and had previously hinted at extending his stay in Portugal before Real Madrid made their move.

Despite criticism from some football analysts who believe the modern game has evolved beyond Mourinho’s pragmatic methods, Real Madrid’s hierarchy remains convinced he is the right man to rebuild the team’s mentality and restore discipline within the squad.

With world-class talents such as Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham already at his disposal, Mourinho faces the challenge of transforming an underperforming squad into genuine title contenders once again.

For Real Madrid supporters, the hope is that the return of the “Special One” can spark a new era of success and ensure the club avoids a third consecutive season without a major trophy.
