  • Portugal And Spain Renew Iberian Rivalry as USA Chase Belgium Revenge

The race for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches another defining point on Monday, with Portugal and Spain renewing their fierce Iberian rivalry before co-hosts the United States face Belgium in a rematch loaded with history, revenge and tournament consequence.

Only two places in the last eight remain available on Day 26 of the competition, and four ambitious nations will enter the evening believing they have the quality to move one step closer to football’s biggest prize.

The headline fixture comes at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where Portugal and Spain meet in a heavyweight Round of 16 contest that carries all the tension of a regional derby and all the pressure of a knockout classic.

For Portugal, the match is another test of resilience. Roberto Martínez’s side survived a scare in the previous round, edging Croatia 2-1 after Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the penalty spot before substitute Gonçalo Ramos struck a dramatic late winner.

Portugal remain one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams, but they have not yet fully convinced. Their campaign has been defined more by survival, moments of individual quality and late interventions than by total control.

Martínez has rotated his attacking combinations and adjusted tactical systems throughout the tournament, still searching for the perfect balance between experience, speed and structure. The good news for Portugal is that he has a fully fit squad to choose from, with Ronaldo expected to lead the attack alongside Bruno Fernandes and Rafael Leão.

Ronaldo’s presence gives the fixture an added layer of significance. At this stage of his career, every knockout match feels like another confrontation with history. Against Spain, he will not only be chasing goals; he will be chasing another defining World Cup moment.

Spain, however, arrive looking every bit the reigning European champions.

Luis de la Fuente’s side powered into the last 16 with a 3-0 victory over Austria, driven by two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and a header from Pedro Porro. La Roja have scored eight goals at the tournament without conceding, combining attacking sharpness with defensive authority.

Their football has carried familiar Spanish signatures: controlled possession, positional discipline, rapid ball circulation and relentless pressing. Spain have averaged 68.00% possession, suffocating opponents with the ball before punishing them in transition.

The right-sided partnership of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro has become one of the tournament’s most productive attacking weapons. Yamal’s creativity and Porro’s timing from deep have stretched defences repeatedly, while Oyarzabal has emerged as Spain’s leading scorer with four goals.

De la Fuente has even compared the balance of his current midfield to the legendary Spanish side that won the World Cup in 2010. That is a heavy comparison, but Spain’s performances so far have justified growing belief.

There are, however, fitness concerns. Yamal, Porro, Dani Olmo and Aymeric Laporte have had their workloads managed in training, while Nico Williams has returned to team sessions and could make his comeback.

History leans Spain’s way. La Roja have won 17 of their previous 41 meetings with Portugal, while the Seleção have managed only six victories. But Portugal can draw confidence from their most recent encounter, having beaten Spain on penalties after a thrilling draw in the 2025 UEFA Nations League final.

Spain will look to dominate the ball, compress the pitch and force Portugal into long spells without possession. Portugal, by contrast, may be most dangerous when the game breaks open. With Leão’s direct running, Fernandes’ passing range and Ronaldo’s penalty-box instincts, they have enough weapons to hurt Spain on the counterattack and from set pieces.

Spain’s defensive structure has been one of the best in the tournament, with an average expected goals against of just 0.78 per match. Portugal have not created at the same volume, averaging 1.35 expected goals, but they have shown the efficiency and mentality required to win difficult knockout games.

The midfield will likely decide the rhythm, but the match may be settled by the margins: one transition, one dead ball, one defensive lapse, one Ronaldo movement, one Yamal cross.

Extra time and penalties would surprise no one.

Later in Seattle, the United States will attempt to rewrite one of the more painful chapters of their recent World Cup history when they meet Belgium at Lumen Field.

The fixture revives memories of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, when Belgium defeated the Americans 2-1 after extra time in a match that remains deeply embedded in U.S. football memory. This time, the co-hosts believe they have the quality, depth and home support to change the story.

The biggest boost for Mauricio Pochettino’s side came before kick-off, after FIFA suspended the one-match ban imposed on striker Folarin Balogun, clearing him to play against Belgium.

The decision has generated controversy, but in football terms it is a major lift for the United States. Balogun has already scored three goals at the tournament and gives the hosts a sharper focal point in attack.

Pochettino has built a high-energy side around Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman and Tyler Adams, with Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest offering pace and width from full-back. The United States have pressed aggressively, attacked quickly and used the home crowd to amplify their intensity.

But the question remains whether a relatively young American squad can manage the emotional and tactical demands of a knockout tie against one of Europe’s most experienced teams.

Pulisic, in particular, will be central. After an inconsistent group-stage campaign, the U.S. captain has an opportunity to deliver the kind of defining World Cup performance that can lift both a team and a nation.

Belgium, meanwhile, continue to lean on familiar pillars. Kevin De Bruyne remains the creative heartbeat, capable of changing the geometry of a match with one pass. Romelu Lukaku again showed his value in the previous round, coming off the bench to inspire a comeback victory.

The concern for Belgium is at the back. Their defence has experience, but it also carries questions over pace, especially against an American attack built on speed, pressing and quick combinations.

The historical record favours Belgium, who are unbeaten in six previous meetings with the United States, winning four and drawing two. Yet much of that history may mean little on Monday. These are changed teams, in a changed tournament, in front of a home crowd that will expect the Americans to seize the moment.

Should the match go the distance, goalkeepers could become decisive.

Matt Turner has built a reputation for penalty saves, including three during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals. Thibaut Courtois, Belgium’s captain, remains one of the finest shot-stoppers in world football and a goalkeeper capable of tilting shootouts through presence alone.

Between Portugal and Spain’s Iberian collision and the United States’ revenge mission against Belgium, Monday offers the World Cup at its most compelling: history, tension, tactical contrast and national expectation compressed into two knockout matches.

For Portugal, it is a chance to prove that experience and efficiency can still carry them deep. For Spain, it is an opportunity to confirm that their control, youth and defensive perfection make them genuine title contenders.

For the United States, it is a moment to move beyond old heartbreak and announce themselves on home soil. For Belgium, it is a chance to show that experience still matters when the tournament becomes unforgiving.

By the end of the night, two more teams will be dreaming of the quarter-finals.
