  • Red Card, Club Fine and GFA Charge Follow Peral’s Clash with Medeama Defender

Asante Kotoko have fined assistant coach Diogo Peral after his touchline altercation with Medeama SC defender Ebenezer Adade during Sunday’s 1–1 Ghana Premier League draw, imposing an internal sanction as the Ghana Football Association begins a separate disciplinary process.

The club said Peral acknowledged that he could have handled the situation better and acted more professionally. It condemned his conduct as inconsistent with the standards expected of those representing Kotoko. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

The incident occurred at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium during the second half. Adade went towards the technical area to retrieve a ball for a throw-in, and an exchange developed between the player and Peral.

The referee showed the Kotoko assistant coach a straight red card after he retaliated. The match ended with the points shared.

Kotoko said football can be emotionally charged, but that “passion must not come at the expense of professionalism, discipline and respect”. The club described the fine as a way to reinforce accountability and its standards on and off the pitch.

The sanction puts the spotlight on the responsibilities of technical staff during moments of tension. Coaches and assistants are not simply observers on the touchline: their conduct can influence the temperature of a match, the behaviour of players and supporters, and the example set by the club.

The use of a red card reflects the referee’s assessment of the incident during the game; the GFA process will determine whether further action is warranted under its rules.

The internal fine is separate from the case before the GFA Disciplinary Committee. Peral has been charged under Article 12(1)(h) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019, and has until Wednesday, November 4, to respond. A suspension is possible if he is found guilty, but no further sanction has yet been announced.

That distinction matters. Kotoko’s decision addresses its own expectations for employees and representatives of the club.

The association’s proceeding concerns the application of league rules and the potential consequences for Peral’s participation in future matches. One process does not automatically determine the other.

Kotoko’s public response also carries reputational weight. By confirming that it had disciplined Peral and that he recognised his conduct could have been better, the club signalled that it would not treat the incident as routine touchline friction.

Its stated commitment to professionalism will now be judged against how consistently it applies that standard.

The match itself had consequences beyond the altercation. Medeama took the lead through Usman Safianu in the 42nd minute, before Kotoko captain Musah Hamzarat equalised in the 55th minute.

The 1–1 result left both sides with a point in their Matchday Nine meeting. The post-match disciplinary story has since become a prominent part of the fixture’s aftermath.

For Peral, the immediate task is to submit a response to the charge within the GFA’s deadline. The committee will then consider the case under the relevant disciplinary rules.

The existence of a charge is not a finding of guilt, and the outcome will depend on the committee’s consideration of the evidence and Peral’s response.

For Kotoko, the episode presents a leadership test in the middle of a demanding season. The club has imposed a fine and publicly stated that the behaviour did not meet its standards. It must now ensure that its coaches and players understand what those standards require, particularly when decisions, delays or confrontations raise emotions during a match.

There is also a wider question for football authorities and clubs: how should the game preserve intensity while preventing physical confrontations from becoming part of its accepted culture?

Competition is emotional, but the touchline remains part of the playing environment. Coaches’ reactions can escalate disputes quickly, while visible sanctions can help clarify the boundaries expected of those in technical areas.

The red card, Kotoko’s fine and the GFA charge represent three different stages of accountability: the referee’s immediate decision, the club’s internal response and the association’s formal review.

The sequence shows that a club can act promptly while a league process continues. It also means the final disciplinary outcome remains open.

Kotoko have urged supporters and stakeholders to continue backing the team as it returns focus to its season objectives.

The draw against Medeama and the controversy around Peral will both form part of that campaign, but the longer-term significance will depend on the GFA’s ruling and whether the club’s stated standards are upheld in practice.

For now, the fine marks Kotoko’s internal response; it does not close the case. Peral’s answer to the GFA charge is due on Wednesday, after which the disciplinary committee will decide whether further action is justified.

The incident has made professionalism on the touchline a subject of scrutiny, and the handling of the case will test how firmly the game applies its rules to technical staff as well as players.
