Ghana Unveils US$3.4bn Renewable Energy Plan to Accelerate Green Transition

Ghana is positioning itself at the forefront of Africa’s clean energy drive with the launch of a US$3.4 billion renewable energy investment plan aimed at reshaping the country’s power mix over the next five years.

The initiative, unveiled at the 3rd Renewable Energy Forum Africa (REFA 2025) in Accra, forms part of government’s broader strategy to strengthen the country’s green transition agenda while boosting private-sector participation in the energy space.

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, said the plan reflects government’s commitment to unlocking Ghana’s renewable energy potential to support long-term economic growth.

“We have taken bold and decisive actions to develop our renewable energy sector for economic prosperity,” he stated.

The strategy outlines the installation of 1,400MW of renewable capacity, deployment of 400 mini-grids to expand rural electrification, construction of over 100 fast-charging stations to accelerate electric mobility, and promotion of solar-powered water pumping systems to enhance agricultural output.

Highlighting ongoing progress, Mr Jinapor noted that Ghana now hosts Africa’s largest single rooftop solar installation at 16.8MW. He also pointed to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent commissioning of a 200MW solar plant, projected to scale up to 1,000MW by 2032.

On the continental front, the Minister emphasised Africa’s persistent energy deficits despite its vast solar endowments.

“A continent blessed with abundant solar potential cannot afford to remain shackled by energy poverty. This is unacceptable,” he said, calling for deeper regional cooperation.

He argued that harnessing even a fraction of Africa’s renewable resource base could transform the continent’s development trajectory. “If we work together to utilise just 20% of our renewable energy potential, we can eradicate energy poverty and drive sustainable development across the continent.”

Ghana’s US$3.4 billion plan signals a decisive push to advance clean energy adoption, leveraging solar, mini-grids, and emerging green technologies to power industry, create jobs, and strengthen environmental sustainability.
